While Elton John is most famous for his contributions to the world of
music, two new exhibitions shine a spotlight on his place in the world of
visual arts. Recognizing that he is one of the preeminent collectors of
photographic art, an exhibition at Atlanta's High Museum and a superb book
complied by Ned Rifkin have been assembled.
For more than a decade Elton John has been building a photography
collection of more than 2,500 works in a wide range of themes and styles,
by some of the twentieth century's most renowned photographers.

features more than 300 works encompassing a wide range of periods, styles,
and subjects. The work of renowned photographers, such as Diane
Arbus,
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker
Evans, Edward
Weston, Man Ray, Alfred
Stieglitz, and others will be on view.
Chorus
of Light : Photographs from the Sir Elton John Collection reveals a
more private side to some of the most dynamic artists and entertainers of
the 20th century. It features an outstanding combination of acclaimed
photographers and superstar subjects. Highlights include: Irving
Penn's
powerful close-up study of the hands of legendary jazz man Miles Davis,
Richard Avedon's head-on Beatles' series, and Edward Steichen's evocative
portrait of 1930s film star Gloria Swanson veiled in sheer fabric.
