Faberge Trans-Siberian Railway Egg
Date: 1900
Height: 10-3/4 inches
Markings: MP (Michael Perchin), FABERGE, crossed anchors, 56
Engraved in silver across the egg is a map of the route of the
Trans-Siberian railway, which ran from St. Petersburg to Vladivostock.
Each station wasmarked by a precious stone. This map forms a broad belt
around this translucent green enamelled gold egg. It is decorated with
blue and orange enamel mounts. Surmounting the egg is a three-headed Eagle
in gold bearing the Imperial Crown and is supported by three Romanov
Griffins, each brandishing sword and shield, and mounted on a white onyx base.
The surprise concealed within is a miniature replica of the Trans-Siberian Express in three sections, the engine and tender in platinum and
gold, and five coaches in gold. The three parts may be connected to form a
train which runs when the clockwork locomotive is wound up above the driving wheels.
