Do Your Homework Before Buying an Antique Oil Buy what you can live with What type of painting would you like to purchase?  Even if you hope to someday resell it, assume that you are going to own this painting for at least ten years. Unrestored painting showing considerable damage  If you are shopping for a work by a particular artist or school of artists, familiarize yourself with their best examples. Much of this research can be done on the Internet: Countless museums, galleries, and universities have photographed their inventories and placed them online.  Take note of what characteristics define a style that peaks your interest. If a painting is said to be by a known artist, ask yourself whether it can reasonably be attributed to this individual.  Look to see if the work is signed.  An attached label bearing the artist's name does not carry the same authority as a signature in the artist's hand.
