TALLCASE, LONGCASE & GRANDFATHER CLOCKS
|
Time to start collecting clocks.
Tallcase clocks — or longcase clocks as the English call them —
really take no time to maintain.
|
|
American tallcase clocks — even antiques like this from the early 19th century — need very little care.
|
Made in England or America from the mid-18th century through the end of
the 19th century, tallcase clocks require little attention and are very trouble free.
For the most part, owners should let the clocks run
until they stop, which for some clocks could be between 40 and 50 years.
|
|
We advise, however, that owners pay attention to the clock's
cables, which hold the weights. If they're worn, they should be changed.
In addition, the clocks should be kept out of direct sunlight, as the
light is bad for cases and especially for painted dials.
Grandfather clocks, the modern version of the tallcase clock made after
1920, need to be serviced more frequently, roughly every five years. Many of newer clocks are more complicated — programmed to
chime every 15 minutes rather than just on the hour — and the materials
aren't as sturdy. Routine checks are beneficial, as it's
expensive and difficult to do a full overhaul of these clocks.
Overall, however, all of these types of imposing clocks are rather forgiving. Treat them
well and they'll be a dependable friend for life.
