ZODIAC COLLECTIBLES ~ What's Your Sign?
|
While it used to be little more than a corny pick-up line, the phrase
"What's your sign?" is becoming more common in our everyday conversation.
Kris Riske, a certified member of the American Federation of Astrologers,
attributes the expanding popularity of astrology to recent advances in technology.
As she explains, "The PC has put astrology calculation programs into the hands of many people."
Technology has also helped fuel astrology-based collecting. The Internet makes it easier for zodiac collectors to share their interests — and their collections. All over the Web, Zodiac-inspired collectibles are being swapped, sold, and auctioned.
As this was being written, the stars were lighting upon the Leo sign in the astrological calendar, lasting until August 22.
Not surprisingly, a recent
eBay search revealed a flood of Leo
collectibles on the block: Leo Astrological Essence Oil, which claims to
be "specially designed to attune to the vibrations of your
astrological sign"; and a silk "hankie" decorated in a Leo
motif.
What may surprise some is that zodiac collectibles — often viewed as too
whimsical or kitschy for serious collectors — are gaining broad appeal
and reaching a more upscale market, as well. Jennifer Rosenzweig, who's
selling the Psychedelic Leo poster on
eBay, recently sold a set of ten of
her zodiac prints to a Paris art gallery.
Noted collectibles sculptor Giuseppe Armani has introduced a series of
fairy-like figures that correspond with the 12 signs of the zodiac.
(Dramatic Leos should delight in the expressive pose and elegant design of
their namesake figurine — a nymph with tumbling golden locks).
There are
also legendary Limoges pillboxes available for zodiac collectors. (For
Leos the top of the box features — what else — a lion in repose).
Turns out, there's a full range of zodiac collectibles available, from the
ephemeral to the elegant — and they're gradually making their way into
the display cases — and galleries — of collectors at both ends of the market.
