To prevent crazing in dry environments such as safe deposit boxes, some dealers store opals in distilled water.
Avoid heat and sudden changes in temperature.

Opals occasionally crack or craze when cut and set, and with sudden temperature changes.
Sudden changes in heat and over heating can cause opals to turn white or brownish and can cause the play-of-colour to disappear.

Opals require special care because they are soft and fragile. Do not wear opals while sunbathing or set them on sunny window sills or under hot lights. Take off opal rings and jewelry when doing housework and playing sports.
