  Yowah Nut Opal

Yowah is a small opal mining town 165 kilometres west of Cunnamulla in western NSW. It is the home of the unique Yowah Nut Opal and Ironstone Matrix Opal, a type of opal only found in this part of NSW.

Yowah nuts are opal deposits which have formed inside a nut like kernel of ironstone. They are usually very hard and can be polished to a very high gloss and are often made into attractive jewelry.

Opal was first discovered at Yowah towards the end of the nineteenth century. The original mine, The Southern Cross, is still producing today and the council provides a public fossicking area for visitors.

Show an interest in opals and opal mining and there are plenty of locals eager to help. The town has numerous opal cutters and retail outlets where you can purchase the stones the area is famous for.
