Adolf Hitler
In a comprehensive treatment of Hitler's life and times
up through the remilitarization of the Rhineland in 1936, Kershaw draws from documents
recently made available from Russian archives and benefits from a rigorous source
criticism that has discredited many records formerly understood to be
reliable. Hubris thus supplants Alan Bullock's classic Hitler:
A Study in Tyranny as the definitive account of a man who, with characteristic
smugness, indicated that it was a divinely inspired history that made him: "I go with
the certainty of a sleep walker along a path laid out for me by Providence."
Kershaw's penetrating analysis of how such a certain path could emerge from the dire
circumstances of post World War I Germany is the abiding strength of Hubris. --James
Highfill
Rise & Fall
of the Third Reich - Mein Kampf
Before writing the first volume of his substantial
biography of Adolf Hitler, Ian Kershaw focused on the popular appeal of the Nazi dictator
in The "Hitler Myth". Arguing that "the sources of Hitler's
appeal must be sought ... in those who adored him, rather than in the leader
himself," Kershaw shows how Hitler's public image welded together antagonistic forces
within the Nazi state, mobilized the nation for war, and contributed to the ethos that
animated systematic and genocidal violence.
Bullock describes with chilling specificity how through
adroit manipulation of popular discontent, the control of information, and the politics of
terror, a madman and a monster inspired Germany to perpetrate the defining horror of this
century.
This is the basic book that the "WWII" industry has standardized in the field.
It provides a great deal of factual information, moving beyond esoteric
analyses of Hitler, to examine the War as well. Although Bullock seems
"anti-Nazi" it was one of the most unbiased books on this "dark"
topic. A nice part of the book is the detail that Bullock gets into with
regard to Germany's pre-WWII Treaties.
A bestseller in its original German edition and
subsequently translated into more than a dozen language, Joachim Fest's Hitler is
acclaimed as "the best single volume available on the tortuous life and savage reign
of Adolf Hitler" (Time). Ranks as a companion volume to Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and Albert Speer's
memoir Inside the Third Reich. Still the best bio of Hitler. If the
amateur historian has time for only one biography of Adolph Hitler, this is the one to
get.
Trevor-Roper's intimate memoir opens the door to
Hitler. This book looks at the various personalities of people within the
Third Reich, such as Adolf Hitler himself, Heinrich Himmler
and Albert Speer. The second half is an intimate account of the last ten days
of Hitler, beginning with his fifty-sixth birthday in an underground bunker below the
ruins of the Reich Chancellery. Here we see the Fuehrer's birthday reception,
his rejection of Goering and Himmler, his last testament, his marriage to Eva Braun,
and his suicide and cremation. The book is a terrific source for anyone who wants insight
into the fall of the Third Reich, which survived the death of its founder by just one
week. This refers to the original edition of H. R. Trevor-Roper's "The
Last Days of Hitler," published by Macmillan in 1947. Read it and above all,
enjoy it!
