2005 Topps Pope John Paul II World Treasures card

Pope John Paul II 2005 Topps World Treasures card Sold For USD$8,100

Shortly after the Pope's death in April 2005, the Pope's 2005 Topps World Treasures card sold for USD $8,100

The Pope John Paul II trading card, which features the late pontiff's actual signature, was sold by a California collector to another Golden State collector.

To date, the Pope's card has generated the largest sum recorded for any of the 48 cards included in Topps' 2005 World Treasures, which was released in November 2004.

The trading card set features issues of historical figures complete with "cut signatures"  showing autographs taken from documents and incorporated into the card's design.

Other world leaders featured in the series include Czar Paul I and King Frederick the Great, whose cards have sold for $3,050 and $3,000 respectively. Each card is one-of-a-kind.

The June edition of Beckett Baseball says the Topps Pope's trading card is the hottest  on the trading card market and details the sale of the card.

"The Pope's card is a one-of-a-kind. It depicts one of the most revered leaders in history, so from that standpoint, the sale really isn't surprising. These types of cards, featuring world leaders and historical figures, are en vogue right now. Collectors love the novelty aspect of these issues," says Mike Payne, editor of Beckett Baseball

The Pope's card still has a long way to go before it is considered the most valuable trading card of all-time, though. According to Beckett, the biggest sale ever recorded for a trading card remains the $1.26 million paid for a 1902 T-206 Honus Wagner in 2000.

The "World Treasures" Signature Cards are featured in 2005 Topps Baseball Series 1 and The "Power Brokers" Signatures are featured in the 2005 Topps Baseball Series 2.

American Tobacco Cards:
A Price Guide and Checklist

by Robert Forbes, Terence Mitchell

Note: Auction Watch reports that a Honus Wagner baseball card sold at Sotheby's New York in November 2004. "Among the premier highlights to be offered is the iconic T206 Honus Wagner card. In 1909 the American Tobacco Company issued its landmark T206 set of baseball cards which featured virtually all of the baseball players of the day. Honus Wagner, a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and one of the first stars of modern day baseball, was the finest hitter of his day. The reason for the rarity of his card (approximately only 50 are known to exist) has been debated for decades. It has been suggested that due to his objection to having his name affiliated with the marketing of cigarettes, he was successful in halting the production of his card and consequently few were ever circulated. This rare survivor, the third finest known example, is estimated to sell for $375/500,000."
